Australian Inventors: Who Are They?

Based on a database of Australian inventors listed on US patents and data from a recent survey of all Australian inventors who applied for patents at IP Australia in the last two decades, Alfons Palangkaraya will investigate the importance of legal protection in the commercialisation of the inventions. He will also explore the characteristics of the inventors such as their productivity and mobility and the nature of their inventions as well as provide comparisons to the experience of inventors from other developed countries.
Alfons Palangkaraya is a Senior Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute and the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia. He obtained his doctoral degree in economics from Oregon State University with areas of specialisation of industrial organisation, international trade, and productivity analysis. His current research topics include network of inventors, knowledge spillovers, market for technology, patent examination processes, and the link between firm productivity and innovation. His works has been published in internationally reputable economic and law journals such as The Review of Economics and Statistics and The Federal Circuit Bar Journal. In addition, he has served as the editor/co-editor of IPRIA publications: R&D and Intellectual Property Scoreboard and Australian Patent Applications Scoreboard. Alfons has served as a research consultant for various institutions including, the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, IP Australia, The Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the ASEAN Secretariat and the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet.
