Banning Tobacco Logos: A Look at the Issues
A free public seminar in Melbourne proudly presented by IPRIA
The Australian Government recently announced its intention to ban the use of artwork and logos in the branding of tobacco products, effective from 2012. In this seminar, four distinguished speakers, comprising: Professor Mark Davison (Law, Monash University); Professor John Freebairn (Economics, University of Melbourne); Associate Professor Angela Paladino (Marketing, University of Melbourne) and Mr Tim Wilson (Institute for Public Affairs), consider the economic, legal, ethical and marketing implications of this decision.

PRESENTERS:

Mark Davison is a Professor in the Faculty of Law at Monash University. He is a co-author of Shanahan’s Australian Law of Trade Marks and Passing off, the leading Australian reference work on trademark law. Mark is a member of the intellectual property committee of the Law Council of Australia, and special counsel with Knightsbridge Lawyers. He is a winner of an Australian Research Council grant investigating the interpretation of the TRIPS agreement and has written the trademark chapters for the forthcoming book entitled ‘Commentary on the TRIPS agreement’. He has given advice to the Cancer Council Victoria about plain packaging. |
John Freebairn holds the Ritchie chair in economics at the University of Melbourne. He has degrees from the University of New England and the University of California, Davis. Prior to joining Melbourne in 1996 his preceding career includes university appointments at the ANU, LaTrobe and Monash, and periods with the NSW Department of Agriculture and at the Business Council of Australia. John is an applied microeconomist and economic policy analyst with current interests in taxation reform and environmental economics. |
Angela Paladino is an Associate Professor in Marketing at the University of Melbourne. She is a recipient of over $2M of competitive funding and has collaborated with over 40 organisations across her research and teaching, including the CSIRO. Her research has appeared in leading international journals and media outlets. She has been recognized for her excellence in teaching and research with numerous awards from national and international agencies. Angela researches in strategic marketing, innovation management, environmental marketing and consumer behaviour, in which she has co-authored a number of market leading texts. She is a member of the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council and a fellow of numerous international marketing associations. |

Tim Wilson is the Director of the Intellectual Property and Free Trade Unit at the Institute of Public Affairs. He’s previously worked for trade and communication consultancies and in international development for the Australian APEC Study Centre. Tim has a Masters of Diplomacy and Trade and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University. He has also studied IP at the WIPO Academy; and Global Health Diplomacy and the WTO, International Trade and Development at the Institut de Hautes Études Internationales et du Développment. Tim is a member of DFAT`s IP Industry Consultative Group. In 2009 he was recognised as one of the ten emerging leaders of Australian society. |
